Centre Stage Company and Haverhill Silver Band combine to bring the stage version of the 1990s hit film about miners, music, despair and defiance, all laced with gritty northern humour.

Grimley Colliery is set to close as accountants say there's more money in it shut than open. It means 1,200 job losses, a dying town and the demise of its brass band. But under the leadership of Danny, coughing with coal-dusted lungs, the band is somehow transformed into British champions. Young miner and bandsman Andy is re-united with his childhood sweetheart who has returned to the town and joined the band. But his hopes of completing his 14-year-old 'top half only' fumbling behind the bus station look doomed when it emerges she is working for management.

Described as 'touching and savage', this 'great and terrible' story seems as resonant today as it was in post-Thatcher Britain.

Please note this production includes smoking on stage and some adult language.
